Winix PlasmaWave 5300 Air Purifier – Surprisingly Effective Air Cleaner

The Winix PlasmaWave 5300 air purifier shares design roots with the well-regarded Sharp PlasmaCluster. A close examination, though, shows there’s nothing second hand – or second rate – about the way this home air purifier works.

That top notch performance starts with its air cleaning capacity. The AHAM’s Clean Air Delivery Ratings (CADRs) for the PlasmaWave 5300 are: Smoke: 235, Dust: 248, and Pollen: 251. Note the different numbers for different particle types. Very respectable figures.

What they mean, for example, is that the Winix 5300 can clear 235 cubic feet per minute of smoke from room air. So, it takes only a few minutes to clear a 350 square foot room with an average height ceiling. At, say, 18 feet x 18 feet that would be a pretty good-sized home office or bedroom.

One reason it can do that are the four separate fan speeds. Luckily, even at the top speed, the Winix PlasmaWave 5300 is one of the quieter units around. Set it up in your home office and you’ll hardly notice it above your computer’s fan, even when running at top speed.

That doesn’t happen often. Turbo mode starts automatically when the unit senses ‘bad’ air, such as a heavy concentration of smoke or pollen. Once cleared, it automatically downshifts again to normal running speed to maintain that pure air quality.

The 22″ high x 16″ wide x 9″ deep case features good seals. What goes inside gets filtered. A look inside when you change the filter will show there’s no dust around the sides, evidence that there’s no air bypass. You will see quite a lot on the excellent True HEPA filter inside. It filters a minimum of 99.97% of particles down to 0.3 microns. That will eliminate all but viruses which are in the range of 0.020-0.250 microns.

Another major component is the carbon mesh filter. Carbon has a large surface area and is weakly reactive with a wide variety of common household molecules. That’s a fancy way of saying a lot of things tend to stick to it. It’s also impregnated with anti-microbial compounds that help destroy flu viruses and other airborne microorganisms.

The next filtration stage adds another important layer of air purification: the ionizer. A voltage applied to plates inside the unit creates ions. Those spread out in the air to combine with naturally present water vapor. That produces hydroxyl radicals (negatively-charged OH ions).

Those hydroxyl ions oxidize, and therefore kill bacteria, viruses, mold spores, and more. They also help disintegrate many common VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). If your interior holds paint fumes, cleaning product vapors, and more the ions simply decompose them into CO2 and other harmless molecules.

If the slight clicking noise bothers you (some people are sensitive to low background noises), it’s easy to turn the ionizer off and on. Just turn it on as you leave the room and let it work. Turn if off when you return.

Characteristics Of Casement Windows

Casement windows are typically characterised by a window with one or more hinges, attached to a frame. Before the advent of sash windows, they were the most common type of windows used in households. Casements were once the most widely purchased style of windows, before sash windows became commonplace. They traditionally consisted of framed glass panes that were fixed in place by strips of lead and the window could be opened outwards.

Useful Properties

Whole Opening

Casements can be opened much further than any other type, since the entire window can be swung open. This can be compared to the following types of windows.

Double-hung style: the whole window cannot be opened only the upper or lower half can be open at any one time.

Sliding: only one side of the window can be opened with this type of window.

Fixed: these windows cannot be opened at all.

Casement windows are a popular choice, especially if the size of the window opening is important.

Harder for Break-ins/More difficult for Break-ins

Casement windows feature a hook shaped, embedded casement lock which is very inaccessible to someone outside and thus makes the window very difficult to break into.

In comparison the double-hung style of window can be opened quite easily by lifting the sash using a long object such as a pry bar.

Maximum Ventilation

The fact that the entire window can be opened allows for maximum ventilation. Furthermore, wind which blows sideways along the property wall will find it difficult to penetrate, thus creating a lack of ventilation. Since casements have an opening sash they can essentially direct the wind into the house which can be especially useful if you have any windows directly facing another building with very little space in between.

Opening & Closing

Casements are easy to open and close due to their single leaver or tandem latches, and they can even be enhanced by fitting automatic openers.

Disadvantages

Unsafe

The large window opening can be dangerous at high levels, since the gap is typically sufficient for small person or child to crawl out of and therefore poses a risk for families with young children.

Incompatibility with Air Conditioning

Casements typically do not cater well for air-conditioning units since they open outwards, especially when compared to other types such as sliding windows.

Size Limitations

Casements are designed to open outwards which means the opening needs to be strong enough to support the window. This places limits on how large a casement can be without placing unnecessary strain on the window opening.

Portable Air-Conditioner Unit – What Are the Benefits of Having a Portable Air-Conditioner Unit?

An air conditioner has become so common that all folks have taken it for granted. Can you imagine an office without air conditioning units? When we talk about air conditioning, I guess that you will think of the big and bulky box blocking an entire window. However, not all units are like this.

Nowadays, you can get portable units which serve the same purpose as traditional units. A traditional unit usually weighs at least one hundred pounds which is way heavier than a portable unit.

A portable air conditioner unit offers the same cooling capability of larger units. Portable units have a lot of benefits which I am going to share with you in this article:

1. Can be easily moved from one place to another. As a portable air conditioner unit is very light, you can easily take the unit from one room to another. This gives you a lot of flexibility to decide which room you want to cool and just bring the unit over.

2. Lesser maintenance checks. A portable air conditioner has few internal parts which will greatly reduce the need for maintenance checks and repairs. Sometimes, air conditioning maintenance can cost you a bomb. By using portable units, you can save money on maintenance cost. Moreover, as the portable unit is not that complicated, you can even do any small repairs or servicing yourself. This is what makes portable air conditioner units so popular among consumers.

3. Use lesser electricity. Everyone knows that air conditioning is usually the main factor for high electricity bill. Portable units use lesser electricity and this is another very attractive point among consumers.

4. Special ducting. Some portable units have special ducting that will direct warmer air to outdoors which will help you save on cooling costs.

So where can you get a portable air conditioner unit? Most hardware stores and some air conditioning companies provide several models for you to choose from. Price will differ based on the features of various units. Usually, smaller units will cost you lesser, which is another attractive benefit to start having air conditioning in your home.

Before you buy a portable air conditioner unit, it is important for you to conduct a proper research. Decide on the model that you wish to purchase and compare the prices between a few companies. Take your time during this research phrase and choose the best model for your home or office.

Cleaning And Maintenance Of Your Cable Tray Installations

The cable trays are the boon for the industries which are operating with a messier wire system and are seeking for some reliable solutions. Cable trays are one of the most popular wire management systems which are safe and reliable. They are available in huge variety and serve the various purposes to the industries as per the requirement as well as the type of the trays. They are used in a large number of industries and the main aim of the trays is to provide a flexible, strong structure to the worldwide prestigious customers. They are a perfect solution for various ranges of projects, including damp saline environments, commercial sector, industrial sector, etc. for the internal as well as the external installation.

They are safe, popular and dependable. You can install the system over the heads or under the floor for space savings. The device is designed for one of the essential purposes that is the proper management of cables and wires. They prevent the damage of the cables and allow them to slide through easily. They prevent the spillage of the wires from the trays and are designed to hold more and more cables. They are fixed on the walls but are suspended from the ceiling.

Cleaning And Maintenance Of Cable Trays For Better Efficiency:-

  • Avoid Sharp Objects For Rubbing The Surface: While cleaning the tough machines and installations, we never keep the soft cleaning in mind instead we go for abrasive cleaning with some metal scrapers. However, rubbing the surface vigorously with sharp objects can damage the surface of the installation and harm the structure of the trays. Choosing some soft cloth or plastic scouring pads for such purposes are recommended.
  • Don’t Go Harsh With Chemicals: Using some harsh chemicals like chlorine which is also known as chlorides and found in hard water to make it pure. It should be avoided because it damages the protective layer of the trays which leads to further damages and increases the risk of corrosion. Also, hard water contains high mineral content which harms the trays too. If you use any cleaner that contains chlorides immediately rinse the surface of the trays to reduce its effects.
  • Use Correct Tools: Using the correct tools for handling and cleaning of the trays is as important as using them at the time of installation of the system. This helps to preserve the protective layer of the trays and also eliminates the corrosion of the material.

Top 10 Compressed Air Rules of Thumb

Here are the TOP TEN Compressed Air “Rules of Thumb” – designed to respond to the questions that industrial air compressor users ask about most.

1. CFM delivery per Horse Power expected at 100 PSIG:

o For “home owner” type of air compressors—2 to 2.5 CFM per HP

o For Industrial Air-cooled 2-stage air compressors—-3.5 CFM per HP

o For Small Vane & Screw air compressors (25 HP or less) 4 CFM per HP

o For large Piston, Screw & Centrifugal air compressors–4.5 to 5 CFM per HP

NOTE: THE MORE CFM PER HP – THE LESS ENERGY USED.

2. Air Receiver Size needed for these types of inlet control:

o Modulating Control—————0 to 1 gallon per CFM

o On-Line/Off-Line—————– 3 to 4 gallons per CFM

o Stop-Start/ Variable Speed– 4 to 6 gallons per CFM

NOTE: THE MORE AIR STORAGE  – THE LESS ENERGY USED

3.  Amperage per Horse Power:

115 Volts——-  1 phase——– 10 amps per horse power

230 Volts——-  1 phase——– 5 amps per horse power

208 Volts——-  3 phase——– 3 amps per horse power

230 Volts——-  3 phase——– 2.5 amps per horse power

460 Volts——-  3 phase——– 1.25 amps per horse power

574 Volts——-  3 phase——– 1 amp per horse power

NOTE: THE MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT THE MOTOR – THE LESS ENERGY IS USED.

4. Air Piping Size by CFM and Pressure Drop:

o Compressor Room Header—0.25 PSIG pressure drop per 100 feet of piping

o Main Line—————–0.5 PSIG pressure drop per 100 feet of piping

o Loop Line—————–1 PSIG pressure drop per 100 feet of piping

o Branch Line—————2 PSIG pressure drop per 100 feet of piping

NOTE: THE LESS AIR PRESSURE DROP – THE LESS ENERGY USED.

5. Size your Compressed Air Line Filters to be twice (2x) your compressor CFM flow rate.

o This will lower your pressure drop 2-3 PSIG and save an additional 1% on electrical energy costs.

o Elements will last twice (2x) as long and this can save on your maintenance costs.

6. Lowering Air Compressor Pressure settings by 2 PSIG will result in a 1% energy savings.

7. Lowering Air Compressor Inlet Air Temperature by 10° F will result in a 2% energy savings.

8. The average energy cost to operate an air compressor is approximately $0.10 per horse power per hour.

9. Compressed Air system leaks totaling the size of a 1/4″ orifice, at 100 PSIG, running 24 hours a day will waste approximately $15,000 worth of electrical energy a year.

10. Using Synthetic Compressor Lubricants can save you up to 9% of the energy cost of operating your compressor as compared to using a non-synthetic lubricant.

COMPRESSED AIR DEFINITIONS:

CFM= Cubic Feet per Minute  – Volumetric air flow rate.

Inlet Pressure = The actual pressure at the inlet flange of the compressor.

PSIG= Pounds Per Square Inch Gauge

AMPS=Abbreviation of the plural for Ampere, a unit of electrical current

Pressure = Force per unit area, measured in pounds per square inch (psi).

Pressure Dew Point = For a given pressure, the temperature at which water will begin to condense out of air.

Inlet Temperature = The total temperature at the inlet connection of the compressor.

Knowing these “Rules of Thumb” can assist you in understanding many of the basics of compressed air. Applying these tips can help save you time , energy and money.

Does Too Much Humidity Cause Mold to Grow?

One of the worst parts about the summer is dealing with humidity. Humidity is a result of too much water vapor in the air, which brings about that sticky and uncomfortable feeling we’ve all grown to hate. However, while we dislike the feeling of humidity, there is a more serious issue at hand. When there’s too much moisture in the air, mold tends to start growing, which can cause those with allergies to start coughing and sneezing, among other health conditions.

To get this moisture out of your house, there are some systems you can invest in. You can either purchase a heating, air conditioning, ventilation or HVAC system, which will not only remove the humidity from the air, but also leave you feeling cool and fresh.

The Dangers of Mold

If there’s too much moisture in the air, this could cause you to experience all sorts of health and respiratory conditions like allergies and asthma.

Pump Your AC System on High to Remove the Humidity from Your House

The best way to get the humidity and mugginess out of your house is by blasting the air conditioning in your house. If you feel that is not working as well as you would like, you can also invest in a dehumidifier. Then, for those areas of the house where there is a ton of moisture, you can install a ventilation system, which will remove the humidity altogether thanks to its fan. Typically, you see these placed in rooms such as the bathroom.

If you have a HVAC system, make sure it’s installed properly. That’s because if it’s not, it will not work correctly. Also, check that the system isn’t too big for your property. If the HVAC system is too large this will cause the air to stop flowing around and doing its job.

Are You Ready to Deal with the Summer?

To make sure that you can handle the humidity this summer, have a qualified technician stop by your home and check out your ventilation, heating, air conditioning and HVAC systems. For HVAC systems, you may need to have your filter replaced, since generally disposable filters are used for that. Those filters also need to be cleaned often. If you don’t have your systems constantly checked on, they may end up breaking down on you, which will cause a lot of moisture and humidity to run wild in your house.

Air Conditioning Repair Tips For Hiring Repair Services

When it comes to fixing your AC during summers, you do not think much about anything and just dial the first number that you come across. Doing so sounds fine at the moment, but the services you get are often unreliable in this manner. Therefore, it is always better to have some numbers of air conditioning repair services so that you can call them in time of need.

You can find reliable air conditioning repair services through a number of sources. The best way is to ask references for an ac service providers. If any of your neighbors have recently acquired air conditioning repair services, then you can ask them for the number. However, before you do so, it is essential that you ask your neighbors whether or not they are satisfied with the services provided.

The main problem is that, whatever they do, it gets broken again within no time. Therefore, you need someone reliable who can provide your proper services that will ensure your AC works a long time without facing any more problems.

Before you decide to hire any company, you must note down all the problems and their detail. Use a notebook for this purpose. This will help you ensure that the services you get are complete and take care of all the problems with your AC unit.

Often time people forget that their AC is still in warranty. Check if your AC is still in warranty and if it is, find the nearest authorized repair center. You can do so by calling the customer service number provided on the manual of the AC.

If you do not have warranty then you should get back to finding AC repair services the old fashioned way and that is asking for referrals. Other people who have recently used such services can help you a lot in finding quality AC repair services.

If the AC repair service provider accepts credit card payments then things can work well in your favor. This is because if you are not satisfied with the services provided, you can stop the payment by calling the credit card company. The credit card company will take your side on this matter and you will get quality services for the amount you paid.

Make sure to use these tips when you are looking for reliable air conditioning repair services to repair your AC for the upcoming summer season.

4 Reasons Why Gold Is An Amazing Metal And How to Recognise Fake Gold

These are just some of the reasons why gold is so amazing.

Plasticity

Gold is a soft, yellow metal with a beautiful lustrous sheen. It is the most malleable and ductile of all the elements. Gold is so malleable that it can be rolled into semi-transparent sheets and so ductile that it can be pulled into wires small enough to use in semiconductors. One ounce (28 g) of gold can be beaten out to 300 square feet. You could say gold is the Play-Doh of metals.

Conductivity

Gold is a very good conductor of heat and electricity. Among all precious materials, silver has the highest thermal conductivity and the highest light reflectance. Although silver is the best conductor, copper and gold are used more often in electrical applications because copper is less expensive and gold has a much higher corrosion resistance. Since gold never corrodes and can be moulded to any shape, it’s used to make long lasting electrical connectors in all types of devices.

Reactivity

Gold is one of the least reactive elements on the Periodic Table. It doesn’t react with oxygen, so it never rusts or corrodes. Gold is unaffected by air, water, alkalis and all acids except aqua regia (a mixture of hydrochloric acid and nitric acid) which can dissolve gold. In fact, gold’s acid resistance is one of the reasons why our acid assays are so accurate. Gold does react with halogens. It will, for example, react very slowly with chlorine gas at room temperature to form gold chloride, AuCl3. If gold chloride is heated gently, it will decompose to release the pure elements again. Gold is also resistant to most bases with the exception of potassium cyanide.

Energy Reflectance

Surface reflectance of a material is its effectiveness in reflecting radiant energy. It is the fraction of incident electromagnetic power that is reflected at an interface. Gold is a good reflector of electromagnetic radiant energy, including radio waves, infrared, and ultraviolet radiation. The characteristic optical properties of gold, combined with its complete resistance to attack in any surroundings and its ability to be applied as very thin films, make gold a very versatile material for diverse industries’ applications. For example, gold is often used in aerospace applications to provide protective coatings for satellite components and space suits.

As a refinery, we deal with high volumes of gold in all manner of shapes, weights, and purity levels. Thanks to our technologies we’re able to leverage several types of assays to authenticate the melt-value of anything a customer may bring us.

However, there are also several quick and easy ways to identify alloy from pure gold.

Discolouration: Pure gold does not tarnish, so carefully check for any discolouration. Even slight shade variations can reveal fake gold.

Magnets: Gold (like most other precious metals) is not magnetic. If the piece in question reacts to the magnet, it can only mean that iron, nickel or other ferromagnetic material is alloyed with the gold so it may be a lower karat than advertised.

Scratching: Even without acid, a simple scratch test is enough to uncover many types of fake gold. A Porcelain Scratch test can be performed by using an unglazed tile or ceramic plate and scratching the object on the tile. If it leaves a black streak, the item is not gold. If the streak is gold in colour, the item is likely to be gold. This may scratch the piece, but should not cause much damage.

Float test: Check the buoyancy of the item by dropping it in a glass of water. Real gold is dense and will sink, but many alloys will float. Also, if your piece will rust or discolour, then it’s plated or fake. Of course, this test is more effective on small samples, such as jewellery or alluvial flakes. Be aware that many metals designed to look like gold are still dense enough to sink, so even if the piece passes the float test, you should still try additional assays.

If uncertain, it is always a good idea to ask for a specialist consultation.
