Notes on Tortoise Hibernation and Care

Tortoises can live for over 100 years and so need committed owners to look after them. Tortoises are not native to most countries and climates where they are kept as pets and so as an owner you should understand their needs when kept in these alien conditions.

We are mainly interested here in discussing hibernation but a brief overview of their needs are, a well ventilated vivarium or a Tortoise table with a heat lamp and U.V. (ultra violet lamp) of high output UVB. a 10% full spectrum reptile lamp being ideal. Keep the heat at one end so the Tortoise can self regulate its temperature, the range should be as high as 40c at the hot end and down to 25c at the cool with a night time drop down to 15 degrees. Feed with leafy vegetables and occasional fruit dusted with a good vitamin/calcium supplement, commercial complete foods are also available. You will also need to provide a shallow water dish for drinking and bathing.

Tortoises in their natural habitat will hibernate for only short periods and so need checking regularly throughout their hibernation in our colder climate. Before hibernating insure your tortoise is in good health and a good weight.

It is recommend you weigh your pet before and at least monthly during hibernation, weight loss should not be more than one per cent per month. Any sudden loss in weight means there is a problem and you will need to wake the tortoise.

Hibernate your tortoise in a well ventilated box placed inside another box filled with polystyrene chips, shredded newspaper or another suitable material. Store in a dry and frost-free place such as an insulated shed or garage that will not be liable to temperature changes. You should not hibernate your tortoise somewhere that is liable to temperature changes such as a greenhouse that will get too cold at night and too warm on sunny days. Airing cupboards also are not suitable places for hibernation as many people think as they are usually too warm. Make sure the temperature is between 4-10 degrees Celsius (38-50F) higher temperatures will mean the tortoise may wake up, and in lower temperatures the tortoise will try to dig down to find more warmth, you do not want the tortoise using up energy that your pet should not be using at this time. A maximum-minimum thermometer available from any good reptile specialist pet shop is useful for monitoring the temperature. It is a good idea to protect the hibernation box from rodents also using wire mesh.

If the tortoise shows dramatic weight loss it should be woken and kept awake indoors for the rest of the winter. In this case you will need to provide heat and u.v. Lighting available from reptile specialist pet shops.

Check list of what you will need; 2 boxes (1 to fit inside the other), Insulation material (polystyrene chips), Wire mesh, Scales, Maximum-minimum thermometer, Suitable hibernation place and an Infra-red heat bulb or lamp plus u.v. lighting in case you need to rescue the tortoise from hibernation.

If you have any concerns about the tortoises weight or general health then do not try to hibernate it.

The Importance of Selecting Proper Bathroom Lighting

Bathroom lighting is critical. This is usually the first room we enter in the morning, setting the mood for the remainder of the day. It’s also the room we enter when we are half asleep in the middle of the night.

Washing, putting on make-up, shaving, grooming, and taking medications are but a few of the daily routines in the bathroom. There is no other room in the home where optimizing both daylighting (natural outdoor light) and lighting (light bulbs) is more critical.

Daylighting is important for our overall health and emotions as it sets our circadian rhythms (how natural light affects and resets our biological clock and consciousness). Lighting is critical for our safety (80% of all falls for older adults occur in the bathroom) and personal grooming.

Daylighting

Nothing comes close to beating the warmth, beauty, and emotional value of windows and skylights. These brighten your mood helping you feel more refreshed and energized. They make a smaller bathroom look much bigger. They also have the added value of fresh air and help reduce moisture levels (high levels of moisture can create harmful levels of mold and bacteria and destroy your walls and ceilings).

Windows provide free, energy-efficient, cost-effective lighting and ventilation. They are actually good for you. It has been shown in several prominent studies that daily exposure to natural light can enhance mental and physical well-being, boost concentration and energy levels, and offer a variety of other unexpected perks.

Multiple windows allow for balancing the natural light, cross ventilation, and “opening” the bathroom to the outside. Larger windows can have bottom-up / top-down shades for privacy. Windows can also open in various combinations. Skylights, especially the tube type, offer tremendous opportunities for natural light in small spaces where a traditional window is not practical. A 10″ tube type skylight lets in at least 5-10 times more light than a typical 2×3 sliding bathroom window.

Lighting

Recess lights, especially LED, are terrific for adding task lighting in the general space, including the water closet. For most bathrooms, LED recess lighting on a dimmer is best. It’s always better to “over light” and use dimmers to adjust. Never use fluorescent lights – the bathroom is not a warehouse.

A light over the tub and shower is ideal for providing both mood and grooming lighting. Shaving legs is so much easier when you have overhead lighting.

For vanity areas, wall sconces mounted either overhead or on the sides of the mirror are best. This removes shadowing on the face which makes applying makeup much easier and gives definition when applying lines. Combining both wall sconces and recess lights within the vanity area solves both the shadow and task concerns. Putting on makeup and doing your hair is much easier when combining the two.

Always use multiple switches and dimmers for lighting. This permits a vast array of possibilities for everyone who uses the bathroom. Everyone has different needs and the value of doing this cannot be over stressed.

An LED receptacle type photocell nightlight is perfect in the water closet. It’s ideal when using the facility at night without having to turn on the bedroom lights – blinding you and waking your partner.

For LED lighting, the color temperature and lumens are very important. Temperature does not refer to degrees. Rather, it refers to the color – reddish to blue sky. Lumens refer to the amount of visible light or brightness. Compared to incandescent bulbs, LED lighting uses 70-90% less energy, saves an enormous amount of money over their life span, last up to 25 times longer (23 years or more), and helps to protect the environment.

Backpacking: Tent Features

When considering buying a backpacking tent today it can be overwhelming with all the choices that are available. To complicate matters there are features that may give you a headache trying to figure out which is better. So today my aim is to give you some clarification on features to aid you in your choice. Let’s begin by looking at whether you need a three or four season tent.

The three season tent is good for summer, spring, fall, and is the normal choice for these seasons. However, if backpacking year-round and in the snow is your desire then a four season tent will be necessary. Next decide whether you want a freestanding or non-freestanding tent. The difference in these two is that the free-standing tent can stand on its own and does not need to be staked down. The free-standing tent is also easier to set up and move around if necessary. However, if windy conditions exist it is recommended that you stake your tent down so it does not blow away. Another advantage of the freestanding-tent is when it comes time to break down camp. You can point your tent opening toward the ground, shake and all the loose debris will fall right out of your tent.

Next you would determine whether you would like a single or double wall tent. In looking at a double wall tent you will find that it consists of a body and fly to cover it. Advantages of the double wall is they are usually less expensive, better ventilation, and drier in the wet conditions. In comparison the single wall tent does not have the luxury of an inner body. The benefits are easier set up and lighter to carry. However, the down fall to the single wall tent is poor ventilation which can cause a buildup of condensation which can become a problem. Finally, we turn our attention to the design of these walls and floor of the tent.

On the two wall tents a portion of the inner body is made out of mesh. This is the reason that the circulation is so much better. You can find a partial or substantial amount of mesh on your tent body. If you enjoy gazing at the stars then all you have to do is pull back your fly and experience it from the comforts of your tent. If it is rainy then pull the fly back over for full protection from the weather. It is worth mentioning that you can have a no-see-um mesh for your tent. Very small two-winged flies found all over the world are known as biting midges, this includes no-see-um, sand flies, and other tiny bugs. This mesh was made to keep them out and has approximately six hundred holes per inch. Now in regards to the floor of your tent make sure that the seam is factory sealed and waterproofed. In fact you should make sure of this for all the seams of your tent. Another floor to check out is called a bath tub floor. There is no seam on this floor because the floor is one piece, carries up a few inches on the side wall and is attached there. Last important tip, do your homework before shopping. Anything you are not sure of can be found on the internet. I hope this has given you some insight on the selection of a backpacking tent.

The M-V Estonia Mystery and Tragedy

The M/V Estonia sank in the Baltic 1994. 852 persons drowned or which 502 were Swedes. It was the biggest accident in North Europe since the second world war. Evidently the accident was investigated by the authorities. It took them three years and three months.

The official cause of accident was that a bow door in the superstructure 2.5 meter above waterline was ripped open due to big waves. How then the ferry actually sank was not explained 1997. This lack of information disturbed survivors and relatives of victims. In 2005 the Swedish government decided that the outstanding question ‘how did the ferry sink?’ should finally be clarified by scientific research. Two consortia were given the task.

The SSPA consortia consisted of Swedes, Scotsmen and Dutchmen and was given $ 1 million. The German HSVA consortia was given $ 400,000. In 2008 the results were ready.

The SSPA consortia explained that when the bow door was ripped open, 2 000 tons/minute of water entered the superstructure and the ferry heeled 47 degrees in less than three minutes. Then the ship floated on the deck house for 20 minutes, then it capsized and floated upside down and then it sank during 20 minutes with stern first. Both model tests and computer simulations showed this. In the model tests SSPA had to release air from the hull via two valves, otherwise the ship would not sink. In computer simulations the air in the was apparently slowly compressed during 20 minutes, so that water could flow up into the hull and reduce buoyancy causing sinking. How this phenomenon actually took place, SSPA could not really explain. Capsized vessels floating upside down normally do not sink.

The HSVA consortia produced a completely different scenario. Much less water entered the superstructure according the HSVA research and the vessel suddenly heeled >30 degrees but then the heel was reduced to 40 degrees after about 30 minutes, and then ventilation openings in the side 8 meters above waterline were submerged and the hull was flooded. Thus the ship sank without capsizing. If the ventilation openings actually existed and were open, HSVA could not confirm. They must have been there, otherwise the ship would not sink.

In October 2008 the Swedish government announced in the Parliament that both consortia had confirmed the official cause of accident and had explained the sinking and that the case was finally closed. The research had provided valuable information to improve safety at sea.

However, the case is still not closed. In Estonia the investigation goes on led by chief prosecutor Margus Kurm. Crew members have told a completely different story to him. The vessel was leaking below waterline, the crew was standing to their knees in water in the engine room below waterline. They started bilge pumps to pump the engine room dry. As soon as the ferry heeled, they escaped to open deck to survive. The Kurm report is awaited early 2009. Maybe there will more scientific research to explain the sinking?

Mesh Office Chair – The Advantages Explained

Regular cushioned and leather chairs are getting outdated now and the mesh chair is taking its place. In the first look, you will find that it is just like any other chair available on the market. But the difference is the material used in manufacturing these chairs and that provides better breath facility. This does not mean breath facility for the user but for the furniture. However silly and absurd it sounds it is very essential though. It is a simple concept and can be compared to that which is in your shoes that allows your feet to breathe.

Usually with traditional chairs people used to feel lot of discomfort because heat got trapped and you could actually feel the chair extremely warm causing uneasiness. This is mainly because there is no ventilation and the heat of the body gets ensnared there. Therefore, if you have to work for long hours on this type of chair you will feel like working in a hell. If the chair is made of leather it will also start smelling after some time. On the other hand if you have mesh office chair, the whole scenario is changed.

The material used in manufacturing of a mesh office chair enables air to pass through freely. This helps the chair remain comfortable and no smell gets trapped in it hence keeping it fresh and odorless even when used for longer hours in a stretch. In fact this facility sets mesh office chair apart from other chairs and it is so comfortable that most often used as boss chair in the office.

The durability of the mesh office chair is undoubtedly high in addition to the comfort that it provides to the user. Although these special chairs are made of fabric, but they are so tightly woven that they are sturdy and reliable as well. It gives you the ergonomic comfort also. This does not mean that the chair should be designed ergonomically. This type of boss chair usually allows free flow of air making it ventilated, wading the discomfort and odor unlike conventional chairs and they are not very expensive also.

Benefits of Pig Farming Equipments

Pigs are more sensitive animals as compared to sheep, goats, and other livestock, and they require better management. But, they have an advantage that they give a better return as their feed-to-meet ratio is higher than other livestock and they also have a high breeding rate.

The quality and development of pigs depend on the feeding and housing systems, and this is why it is important for a pig farmer to exploit the modern pig farming equipment which will help in growing healthy pigs and ultimately an increased return on investment.

Some of the Modern Pig Farming Equipments are:

Stalls

  • Gestation Stalls: A gestation stall is primarily meant for housing pregnant sows. These stalls can be used in breeding, gestation and furrowing phases. They provide enough space for a sow and they make physical examination and insemination process very easy. They also help in protecting the sow from injuries and in controlling their feeding intake.
  • Finishing Stalls: These stalls are best for housing heavier pigs, which weigh more than 40 kg.
  • Weaning Stalls: These stalls are mean for the newly-born pigs and designed so that they don’t cause pollution and feel comfortable for the babies.

Pig Feeders

  • Drinking bowl: Modern pig drinking bowls are hygienic and the curled design prevents dust from entering into the water. They also reduce fecal pollution.
  • Nipple Drinker: Nipple drinkers are automatic and they do not allow any leak.
  • Dry-wet Feeder: The advantage of a dry-wet feeder is that they save feedings and are designed in a way so they won’t damage the snout of the pigs.
  • Creep Feeder: It is used to supply feed in furrowing crate for piglets. They are helpful if the mother sow doesn’t have sufficient milk. They are easy to clean and can be used for both feeding and watering.

Ventilation

  • Exhaust Fans: Exhaust fans when installed in a poultry farm can pump out a large volume of foul air without creating much noise.
  • Cooling Pads: It is important to keep the air inside the stalls clean because the climate influences the production capacity of pigs. A cooling pad consists of a fan, rotating discs, motor, and water bowl. The fan pumps out the unhealthy air and rotator disks spray water into the stall.
  • Dynamic Air Ventilation: Energy consumption can be reduced to a great extent by using frequency controlled fans. They can be installed in all types of stalls and can be accessed remotely as well.

Flooring

  • Pigsty Mat: Electrical Heating Mats are combined with the feeder, water bowl, and heating pads. They not only take good care of the pigs, but also prevent them from electric shocks.
  • Plastic Floor: These floors provide good furrowing and prevent frequent touches between the pigs and the dung. They do not corrode and are easy to clean.
  • Fiberglass Beam: These beams work as a support to the breeding fences

Manure Handling

  • Scrappers: Mechanical manure removal systems remove the feces and urine separately from the pig shed. They save a lot of labor costs.
  • Fermenting Machine: Fermenting machines are used for fermentation of sludge, feces, mud etc. and converting them into pig manure.

Laptops Usage Problems

Modern day Laptops operate on very fast microprocessors that generate a lot of heat. This heat mainly escapes out of the bottom of the laptop but ventilation efficiency is reduced when the laptop is placed on a solid surface or on your lap and the ventilation holes get plugged. A hot laptop is less trustworthy and an overheated system is likely to fail.

Laptops work best at temperatures ranging from 95-104°F (35-40°!). When temperatures rise and reach between 104-122°F (40-50°!), there is twice the risk of a hard drive crash! Hard disk drives can overheat and crash, causing you to lose precious data!

Not only is a hot laptop unpleasant to use in your lap but also the heat from some laptops can be enough to cause superficial skin burns, right through your clothing! As reported in the Lancet medical journal a healthy 50-year old scientist, fully dressed in trousers and underpants, burned his genital area after placing his laptop on his lap for an hour. While using the laptop he did feel the temperature and a burning feeling on his lap and thighs. Two days later he had blisters that burst and developed into infected wounds.

Besides being uncomfortable to use, laptops can even reduce the fertility in case of males. Researchers have concluded that working with a laptop placed on the thighs raises the skin temperature significantly. This further exposes the groin area to higher temperatures. It is a known fact that long-term exposure to heat has a harmful effect on male fertility, as the testis are located externally. The sitting position required to balance a laptop can raise scrotum temperature by as much as 2.1 degrees Celsius. Heat from the laptop itself can raise the temperature by another 0.7 C, bringing the potential total increase to 2.8 C. European fertility studies, meanwhile, have shown that in general, an increase in scrotum temperature by 1 C can reduce sperm count by as much as 40 percent. A common practical solution to this problem is to place the laptop on a table or desk.

Thriving sales of laptops have also led to a surge in the number of computer users with back and muscle problems, experts have warned.

Not sitting in a chair with the computer at the right height is taking a toll and children as young as 12 are being diagnosed with nerve injuries caused by slouching over screens. Many others are at danger of damage to their spines, necks and shoulders because of poor posture when using laptops.

The problem is being magnified by falling prices and the ever-increasing availability of wireless technology, which makes portable computers more attractive. As such, Laptop sales are rising by leaps and bounds. Moreover, laptops not subject to the same health and safety regulations as desktop computers making them more prone to incorrect usage.

A common problem is perching a laptop on the legs so users stare down at the screen and put strain on their necks, spines and legs.

Back and neck pain is caused by using a laptop on the move, such as on a train. Resting wrists against the edge of a laptop cab easily induce hand and arm pain similar to repetitive strain injury. It stops the nerves and tendons moving as they normally would, and this can cause nerve injury.
